Environmental Information

Morning Glass, like all other businesses, creates waste and consumes natural resources. The scale of our business means that our ecological footprint is also relatively small, but we feel we can still make a difference and we are strongly committed to minimising waste, reducing consumption and developing sustainable business practices.

The steps listed below, each of which is relatively minor, are steps to making our small business operate in a sustainable manner.

Reduce

  • We no longer use any blacking agents for our lead. The chemicals used to blacken lead in traditional stained glass studios include known carcinogens (e.g. selenium).
  • All our stained glass design utilises CAD techniques, which allows client approval via the web and reduces paper useage.
  • We use fully biodegradable degreasants for all our window cleaning.

Reuse

  • Fired kiln paper is retained and reused as home made kiln wash.
  • Division bars and support bars from restored windows are cleaned and re-utilised wherever possble.

Recycle

  • All our lead scraps are recycled locally into fishing and diving weights.
  • All our glass scraps are retained and sorted, for use in glass related glass art (lampwork, kiln work, mosaics, student projects).
  • Salvaged glass from restoration projects is retained for future use.

Reclaim

  • All our cardboard and bubble wrap packaging is reclaimed from material our suppliers use to pack raw materials.

React

  • We are founder members of the award winning North East Open Studios, a local arts collective committed to the promotion of arts in the local community.
  • We are proud to support Surfers Against Sewage, an environmental group dedicated to clean seas and protection of the marine environment.
