Restored three light door-set, Aberdeenshire

We were approached by a client, who wanted to reinstate three stained glass panels in this traditional doorway after moving to this traditional property in Aberdeenshire. He’d found three panels stored in his garage, after removal (probably in the 90’s) and suspected they were from the (now clear-glazed) front door. They were, although storage hadn’t been kind to them and they were in a rather bad way.

The panels were removed to the studio and stripped out, after soaking for several weeks to soften the lead light cement, which was exceptionally hard, possibly due to the addition of plaster-of-paris to the mix on application.

Installation was fairly straightforward - the original mouldings, although split where they had been removed to install the replacement clear glazing, were salvaged. New tie wires and 10mm support bars were fitted to the sidelights, and the bars on the door were beefed up to 12mm.
