Replacement of damaged Zinc Windows - Brechin

One of the most common repairs we carry out is to zinc framed diamond "quarry" windows. Unlike leaded windows, these are glazed using sections of glass bedded into putty in a T-shaped came, with a putty fillet over the glass to make them waterproof. Typically these windows are extremely robust, and relatively easy to maintain. Simple renovations usually involve the replacement of individual sections of glass, removal of old cracked putty and re-puttying, and then painting on the exterior.

These windows in this listed building in Brechin had suffered badly at the hands of previous owners, and the frames had started to pull apart. A decision was made, in consultation with the local planners, to remove the existing windows and replace with leaded diamond glass, painted to match the originals. Stonework repairs were carried out at the same time by W & L Watson Ltd Stonemasons, St Andrew's, who also assisted with the pointing of the windows using lime mortar.
