New Work Installed - Huntly Arms Gazebo

20080410_0544.jpg

The Huntly Arms Gazebo is a B-Listed wooden structure in the grounds of the Huntly Arms Hotel, Aboyne. Michael Zappert had replaced the windows a few years back, but they had been badly vandalised and needed completely remaking. We remade the panels at my workshops earlier in the year, and today was installation day. The image above shows a series of reflections through two panels of the octagonal structure, before the wire guards were installed. The image below shows the windows, in-situ.

Victorian style windows for an Arts & Crafts house

20080314-IMG_1146.jpg

This morning saw the fitting of three Victorian-style panels in an Arts & Crafts era house in Bieldside. The house, although modernised in part, still retains original leaded quarries in an area that formed a small-scale studio pottery. I will post more images in the portfolio soon.

Started work on screenprinting the Auchterless Kirk stained glass panel today. Each piece of glass in the design will be screenprinted using enamel. Linsay Croall at Peacock is helping me through the process, and we spent today setting up the intial two screens.

And then three come along at once...

Detail of two encapsulated panels, private residence, Feb 2008.

In my e-mail this evening I received photo's of two panels I dropped off with a customer on Monday. The panels form an abstracted image of a tree trunk, and the piecing is derived from a contemporary window in the Sainte-Chapelle, Paris.

All in all it's quite a busy time at the workshop right now. As well as the ongoing work on the Huntly Arms Gazebo with Mike Zappert, I am planning to install a large panel at Westhill Community Centre tomorrow.

Production Line

Mike Zappert, Huntly Arms Hotel Panel 3

Mike and I are currently re-making 6 leaded panels for the Huntly Arms Hotel, Aboyne at my workshop. The work is pretty repetetive, but we are evolving a system wherein progress is steady. It makes a big difference working as a pair, especially since the conversation is wide-ranging and extends far beyond our shared interests (which include, amongst others, biscuits and Japanese hand-tools).

First Look

CAD Leadline drawing and several pieces of glass

Today I started work on a pair of door panels for a client who is installing a large oak door, and wants to incorporate some contemporary leaded glass. The panel depicts an abstracted tree on a blue background. Work went well, and almost all the glass has now been cut. With a fair wind the panels should be ready for encapsulation by the end of next week...

Busy Day

Hilary, soldering a "Strathdon" panel

Needed the heater cranked up today - snow on the roads on the way to the workshops and a cold day ahead. Spent the first part of the morning running paint tests for the Westhill Community Centre panel, then worked with Hilary on a Strahdon panel for Robertson's Stone.

Ballantine's Iron Works

Casting, Ballantine Ironworks

Morning Glass have been asked to produce a design for a panel for the owners of the Ballantine Iron Works in Bo'ness. Yesterday I went down to meet the clients and discuss the panel. The foundry produces cast iron railings, postboxes, and all sorts of ornamental iron work, using traditional methods including sand casting (picture above).

Cold hands, warm colours

Leading up

Spent all day at the workshop, finishing off two small panels. This is me, piecing together the second panel, bathed in the glow of a halogen workshop heater set up on the desktop three feet away from me. I must get the main workshop propane heater fixed - needs a new thermocouple...
