Zinc Framed Windows, St John's Episcopal Church, Aberdeen
Morning Glass Designs recently completed the refurbishment of 16 zinc panels in the cloisters at St John's Church, Aberdeen.
The panels were in a very poor state - several of the larger frames were buckled, with pulled tie wires, broken glass inserts and failed putty checks. The initial approach, from architect James Roy, was to price for replacing all 16 windows with leaded glass, as we had done on a previous project in Brechin. After a site inspection with the joiner, architect and builder, it was decided instead to retain as much of the original zinc glazing as possible, and fabricate new zinc panels for the doors.
We sourced a supplier for zinc frames, and worked with them providing drawings for the profile and templates for the new windows. On delivery of the new frames they were checked with the existing frames for sizing before being glazed with reproduction reeded glass to match the originals.
The damaged panels were cleaned up, with all the old putty fillets hacked out and any damaged glass removed and replaced.
Once all the panels were reglazed, we set about putty filleting all the glass, and then painting the exterior with a traditional white gloss finish. Installation was carried out by Graeme Cheyne Builders, into repaired frames and new timber doors.
