Preparing windows for secondary glazing

We are one site this week, preparing some traditional timber single glazed windows for internal secondary glazing.

A significant amount of heat loss in traditionally glazed properties actually occurs around window frames, and many traditional properties can benefit from ensuring that pointing (traditionally sand mastic) is in good condition. It’s a simple job to do, and will help both with insulation and preservation of the timber frames.

In the window pictured below, we have chipped out the existing mortar pointing and raked the loose material out from behind. Once the clearing out is done, we’’ll replace the putty around the etched and flashed glass, paint the frames and renew the pointing with sand mastic later this week.
